About us (Heat Network Exchange)
The Heat Network Exchange is a joint ADE: Heat Networks and Government forum that exists to grow the low-carbon heat network sector and help deliver long-term transformation of the UK energy system. Together, we are committed to investing in the growth of the sector to ensure that heat networks play a pivotal role in meeting our net zero targets.
Heat networks will provide economic growth, skilled local jobs and bill savings as we decarbonise the economy. It is vital that heat networks play their rightful role in the energy transition: if the UK seizes this opportunity, we will grow this market from £5 billion (3% of heating) today to more than 20% of heating by 2050 – a £100 billion investment opportunity.
Research by ADE: Heat Networks also shows that, in addition to the potential value of this market, an ambitious deployment of heat networks meeting 30% of UK heating would save £86.5 billion by 2050. This would be achieved through avoided grid infrastructure upgrades and avoided investment in generation capacity. Investing in heat networks saves money across the energy system that can then be invested elsewhere.
The ambitious deployment of heat networks includes city-wide district heating as well as smaller scale heat networks using ground source heat pumps and shared ground loops. All these technologies have a role to play in decarbonising heat in the UK, whether at scale across densely populated cities, or in more localised areas. The Heat Network Exchange exists to help make these ambitions a reality by providing a forum that offers practical support, guidance and information to all involved in the sector.
